Sponsored by Acme Bookbinding and Crane & Company
AIGA Boston was established in 1983, and in the 25 years since then a lot has changed. Now in 2009, “change” is the theme once again and so it seems like the right time to celebrate the fact that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Even after 25 years, AIGA Boston is still serving the needs of the region’s design community, and will continue to inspire – and be inspired by – our members.
While this is certainly an occasion for a celebration, it’s also a time for bolstering our skills and knowledge. To mark this milestone we are offering two-pronged event, involving a suite of workshops to choose from during the day, followed by an evening celebration to be held on Saturday, March 28:
PLAY ALL DAY
A series of five workshops encompassing technology, hands-on skills, and business. Topics include:
Bookmaking with Sam Ellenport, Master Craftsman
The Harcourt Bindery
30 participants | 9:30am – Noon
The Harcourt Bindery | Acme Bookbinding | View Map
80 Cambridge Street, Charlestown, MA 02129
The Harcourt Bindery was founded in 1900, and today it is the largest hand bindery in the United States with its twelve employees. Sam Ellenport purchased The Harcourt Bindery in 1971, and was its owner until 2007 when it became a division of Acme Bookbinding Company.
This workshop will encourage you to take a new perspective and to consider bookmaking on this level as an art. We guarantee that you will begin looking at your personal library with far more understanding and appreciation of the work that has gone into producing it.
Sam will lead the bookmaking workshop at The Harcourt Bindery. After a general introduction, each person will participate in a hands-on process. This will lead to the creation of a personal keepsake, with all materials provided. Gold embossing will be part of the process. Workshop also includes a tour of Acme Bookbinding.

Computer Lab, Room 237
Center Campus, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445
This is a workshop based on Keith Peters top selling book “Foundation Actionscript 3.0 Animation: Making Things Move!” Keith Peters and Chris Allen will walk attendees through the basics of ActionScript and how those skills can be applied to create sophisticated animations with code. The workshop is intended for those with a basic knowledge of Flash CS3/4 and little to no experience programming in AS3.
Keith began playing with Flash in 1999. After a couple years of making really horrible Flash web sites and huge intros, he discovered ActionScript, and has not looked back. Keith’s award-winning, personal experimental web site, www.bit-101.com features over 500 cutting edge flash experiments, with source available. Keith has written or contributed to eleven books on Flash and written several magazine articles on various Flash subjects.
Chris Allen is a leader in the Open Source Flash community. Over the last 10 years he has been a software architect and developer for various companies including Cambridge Technology Partners, Mass General Hospital and Scholastic. Chris is currently president and CEO of Infrared5, a consulting firm built around services for the Flash platform, Unity 3D and iPhone, and is co-project manager and a Java developer for the Open Source Red5 project.

Room 119 West
West Campus, 303 Boylston Street, Brookline, MA 02445
In this dynamic hands-on workshop, many ideas will be born through play and discovery. Participants will reexamine type, design, and form making as kinds of drawing, image, sculpture, photography and architecture. We will explore and perform typographic experiments outside the computer using a variety of 2D and 3D materials and processes. We will also look at ways of hybridization and translating one medium into another. By doing this, we'll consider the implications of different media and their effects on our work and its perception. Please bring materials you would like to work with. Please bring a laptop and/or digital camera if possible.
Michelle Bowers is an educator, artist and designer. Her multi-disciplinary work includes typography, illustration, photography and design for arts, academic and non-profit organizations. She has studied in the design programs of Cranbrook Academy of Art and The University of Arizona. Michelle recently joined the College of Visual and Performing Arts faculty at The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she currently teaches Design and Typography. Her work has been recognized by the AIGA, TDC, SOTA, UCDA, HOW, Adobe and STEP Inside Design.
