On September 24, AIGA Boston and IDEO joined to put on a Design Thinking workshop. This workshop was crafted specifically to teach graphic designers about design thinking. The group started with a brief and then developed an approach through observation and participation. The challenge? Redesign tickets for the T, one of Boston's subway lines.

After an introduction at the studio each team exited to Central Square to purchase a ticket and ride to a destination on the Red Line (Davis, Charles MGH); exit, purchased another ticket and returned.

The teams had at least one person with a different constraint (crutches, wheelchair, luggage, dark glasses, baby carriage, ear plugs, etc.). Other team members were responsible for observing, and recording the behavior of the impaired person. After the journey the teams returned to IDEO and captured/shared what they saw in the field, synthesized what they learned and brainstormed about the opportunities. Finally each team sketched initial designs and shared with the group.

IDEO designers guided each team and shared methodologies that participants could begin using in their own practices.

This sold out event was offered exclusively to AIGA members only to reiterate the value of membership. AIGA members Dan, Matthew, Neva, Lindsay, Jason, Tyler, Sanford, Jill, Jose, and Merry were the first members to register--as an exclusive member benefit, the first 10 AIGA members registered received a VIP studio tour and complimentary cocktails/beer with IDEO designers prior to the workshop, from 5:30-6:15.

I loved the fact that the workshop got us outside to spend time experiencing and observing the red line as a system. It makes us realize how important it is to step away from our computers, go outside, and take the time to do some real field research.

AIGA + IDEO: Thx for an educational + experiential evening! Big take-away for me -- innovation happens when you design for the fringe vs. the masses. Lots of exciting solutions surfaced.

What a great event! We got a tour of the IDEO space and an interactive workshop showcasing how design, or lack of it, plays a huge part in everyday experiences. Thanks IDEO!
